Dr. Jamila Riser is a thirty-two veteran of mathematics education in the state. She has had a successful career as a middle and high school mathematics teacher, department chair, coach, district mathematics specialist, assessment writer, and project planner. For the past eleven years, Dr. Riser has served as the Executive Director of the Delaware Mathematics Coalition (DMC). The DMC is an alliance of Delaware public and charter school curriculum leaders and partners from the state’s institutions of higher education, business community, and Delaware Department of Education.
In her role with the DMC, Dr. Riser works with leaders in the organization to coordinate and plan monthly meetings, engages in strategic planning to support the Coalition’s mission and vision for improved teaching and learning, and collaborates with the DMC professional development team to coordinate sustained professional development opportunities for teachers, coaches, and administrators in the state. Dr. Riser is passionate about promoting meaningful mathematics learning experiences that empower all students as thinkers and doers of mathematics. Through her collaboration with leaders at both the state and national levels, she strives to open up the dialogue regarding the barriers to success in mathematics and plan for ways to address systemic issues of equity and access in mathematics. During the spring of 2018, Dr. Riser joined the Board of Directors for the Sussex County STEM Alliance, serving the Vice President of the organization’s Education Sub-Committee. Dr. Riser looks forward to working with the growing number of SCSA members to expand STEM-focused professional learning, educational, and career-based opportunities downstate.
